August In New York clothing advice for children?

I'm taking my kids to New york City in August for 8 days. We will be attending mostly ';dressy'; events. I don't want them to look like they came from ';farmer town'; Illinois, but I can only afford ';farmer town'; clothing. LOL because the trip is so not cheap. It will be pretty hot right? I have a girl in size 12 clothing (Autistic, so needs to be comfortable) and boy in size 2 or 3t. Can you help me find some casual and mostly dressy clothing that will be weather appropriate, cheap, and look original for them? For the boy how about

plaid shorts, which are rather preppy and look nice

with a plain polo

layered of a white tank top

You could pair that with some flip flops and a necklace or a hat.

Unless you want to wear pants, guys looks are rather limited.

Besidies clothes hair can make or break a look.

Maybe give the boy a nice faux hawk like

and for your daughter maybe a nice short bob
