well you have to compare the pros and cons of a fixie and a road bike.

PROS:for a fixie

-cool

-light

-less maintenance

-one gear

-cheaper

PROS:for a road bike

-different gears (faster)

-can ';cruise';

-can break

-generally safer

- bigger choice

CONS: for fixed gear

- cannot break right away

- only one gear, so if it snaps, your doomed for a while

- may forget that you have to pedal with the wheels

CONS:for road bikes

- more maintenance

- heavier

- pricier
Kind of funny I had that problem last year. I spent months looking them up on the internet. There is problems and solutions for each different situation you are in. I needed an extra gear bike for the hills of Vermont. Now I in Oklahoma city and they do not add a brake down lane to the roads. There extremely bumpy and not very hilly. I have bought a 1500 dollar bicycle for 700 of ebay and not rode it since I got here.

If i had the best choice would be lighter is better, less cost part replacement is better, road type gives you tire width and tube type. If your going to put weight on it for traveling you need a strong frame. I bought a bike wagon for the back and it will solve that problem.

I also have an older 500 frame(not sure exact number) from the late 70s and it work great. Do not have to worry about scratching and it has wider tires.

As for handle bars...the more your back is angled the less air resistance. That why i like that curley handlebars. I also added coaster brakes for going down hill and easier to grab when getting on the bike. They help too for quick repairs. Foot rat traps make long trips less painfull and I added Leather over my seat for more butt comfort.
Well if your looking for a good bmx bike that you can stil ride dirt jumps i recomend that Black Eye Park Pro 09. Its a little over 400 but its worth al of it.
